Reflection of 2-6-10

I love the designs and love the teamwork of ours. Each of us work independently but having great teamwork that makes work being faster. We have bought the mounting board for the poster and going to paste the papers on it and the voting box is going to be done.

2-6-10 (part 1)

Yesterday, our group also had a meeting to finish up our project. Although yesterday only three turn up which is me, Stanley and Jie Hng, and the other two due to school events, we had the project done successfully. We had finished the product by finishing the tacking and the designing. These are the bags that we have designed. But these are only part of it.

1-6-10

Today,our group had a meeting, although one member weiren did not came because of school activities, our meeting went successfully with our advertisement which is our video done. I could not upload the video now because the video is with another group member. we have done the tacking of the white cloth on to the green bag. We all have learnt a lot, and my lessons learnt are:

1.I have learnt a new lesson of tacking of having a double stitch to secure the white cloth better, as the white cloth must be secured for it not to be dropped easily.

2.I have learnt that group members must work together to get things done well. Like some group members doing the advertisement, some doing the product, it will surely get the things done faster.

3.I have learnt that having a listening ear is very important to group work. This is because if the leader do not listens to the suggestions given from other group members, the project would not have any improvements. 

Today's reflection :

Today, I enjoyed the meeting as all events went successfully, and I look forward for the next meeting.

Research for global warming and why should we use green bags

WHY SHOULD WE USE GREEN BAGS AND NOT PLASTIC BAGS?


As plastic bags are used everyday all around the world, Hong Kong topped the world in the use of plastic bags of 33 million, about 5 per citizen. 40 million dollars are spent on plastic bags each year. Plastic bags also contain harmful substances to the environment. Plastic bags also pose as a threat to toddlers below the age of 2, about 25 of them die of suffocation each year due to plastic bags. But green bags are made from moslty canvas, woven synthetic fibres of thick plastic that can be reused a lot more time than normal plastic bags. Green bags also allow less carbon dioxide emission when producing and waste less natural resources like oil. Using green bags also reduce the cost of making carriers.



WHY DO WE NEED TO DESIGN THE GREEN BAG?


To make people actually buy the green bags, partly of the reasons why they bought it would also be how good it looks. If the green bags are not good looking, then nobody would buy it. Imagine of someone was walking around with a ridiculous looking green bag. That is why having a good design for the green bag is an important thing so that people who bought the green bag would not look funny and there would be more people buying the green bags. That is why we must design the green bag.

Term 2 Week 5 Reflection

Our group leader Jie Hng has bought the green bags that we need for our project and we are going to strat modifying the green bags this week.

Recycling Bag Specifications

The bag should have an up-to-date designs and the person would be able to wear the bag out freely. A reusable shopping bag, sometimes called a bag of life is a type of shopping bag which can be reused several times: this is an alternative of single use paper or plastic bags. It is often made from fabric such as canvas, woven synthetic fibers, or a thick plastic that is durable and strong.

week 8 and week 9

we have missed two weeks of ipw and we still discuss the problems in our group. the problems are:

1. we do not have enough answers for our survey

2. we have not buy the materials for the green bag like the white cloth and the green bag itself. 

3. the advertisement group have not think of how to present the advertisement.

but our group have done our research already, so that we can compile it into our research file. the research will also be shown in the advertisement.

one suggestion of mine is that we can make two different advertisement, each with a catchy slogan. 

Week 10 Reflection

I have asked our group leader Jie Hng about the cancellation of our survey today. He told me that we were going to make do without the survey and he was not going to make something else as I thought. I think is would be difficult to make do without the survey as we have one less source of information which is quite a lot. I hope we can make it.

Week 9 Reflection

Our group leader Jie Hng has decided to cancel our survey and not use the survey to do the project. He is going to do something else but I am not sure yet as I forgot to ask him. Maybe I will as him tomorrow if I remember.

Week 8 Reflection

Our group leader has done Jun Jie's survey to help them in their project. I think Jie Hng and Kenneth are going to cancel our survey and do something else which i am not sure yet. I have to ask Jie Hng about it later.

Week 8 reflection

Today I looked at the results of the survey. I found out that many people give useless comments. Many are just useless contribution. So I learnt that part of the survey is not reliable. Most of them play pranks with us.

So now, we will just continue on the project ignoring the result. So we will not change anything except useful and constructive comments that we can change our green bag.

Today....

We asked Miss Chin whether we can use the sewing machines and she agreed but we have to find an exact day to sew.

Week 7 reflection

Today, we discussed about our plan. We wanted to sew on a white cloth, using either the sewing machines in the Home econs room or tacking by ourselves, and paint using fabric paints. We would sample about 5 which costs $5 for all. We can also sew on colourful cloth to make it more original.

We also thought of an idea where we make a casing to put the green bag inside. This makes it portable and the casing can be designed too.

For the advertisment group, they will make 1 minute on how greenhouse effect harmed our world, second minute on why plastic bags would contribute to the greenhouse effect. The third minute is on why should we use green bags and the last minute is why use our green bags.

That's all but lI was thinking that since t-shirts can be designed, why not green bags?

Week 7 reflection

Up till now, we still do not have enough number of answers in our survey. So, i think we are going to ask directly otherwise we would not be able to get forward. Maybe tomorrow our group go to one sec one class and one sec three class to ask them the questions in the survey. Hope that we can have the results. I hope that the advertisement group can think of an idea on the advertisement group.

Week 7 Reflection

I don't think there will be much going on this week as we are currently doing our project now.We also have to do a video on ports for PE. Jie Hng is planning to do it before next week. They will be having 2 sessions as I cannot make it this Thursday.

Plastic

Functions:

First,I was thinking to place a plastic lining in the inside of the green bag. This is because most people tend to make their green bag wet and they keep washing them. This makes them wastes a lot of water. This makes people waste more money.

However, it is difficult to sew that into the green bag, but it is still possible.


Design:

Initially, I thought of ideas like cutting out OLD cloth and making them into designs. Such ideas led me of thinking of the basics, cutting out cloth into a head of a Dinosaur and a tail and sew it on both ends of the green bag.

For more creativity, I thought of taking old clothings and cut them into small parts and pasting them on the green bag.

There are many ideas, anyone can improvise on our product.

week 6

there are already 2 to 3 weeks that our group did not post anything. Because we have been discussing every week but did not post. In the three weeks, we found out that the green bag that we need, cost $1 in fairprice but there is a design on it so we need white cloth to cover the design to make it unique. So I have researched and decided that we can buy the white cloth from spotlight. After buying the cloth, we need to design on the cloth. We need fabric markers or fabric paint to design on it. So, one of our members have fabric paint, so I would like to try on the paint first. As we have made a survey, we are waiting for the results to come out.

Week 6 Reflection

I was assigned to do all the researching for this project while the rest of my group members will be doing the advertising and production. Since i had already done a great part for this project, I will be doing the least hands-on job from now on.

the advertisement group will use the research information to plan for an advertisement. they will do advertisement to promote the bag and of course convey the message of saving gaia to everyone.

the Product group will think of the product and do a survey people about the idea. They will do a product which is mentioned in the previous posts. the product will be also shown in the advertisement. saving gaia will be conveyed on the bag itself. Having that, we want to have more and more people to bring an green bag to school instead of plastic bag. The two groups will work intensely together. Bringing out the message.

Research

Plastic bags litter the landscape. Once they are used, most plastic bags go into landfill, or rubbish tips. Each year more and more plastic bags are ending up littering the environment. Once they become litter, plastic bags find their way into our waterways, parks, beaches, and streets. And, if they are burned, they infuse the air with toxic fumes.

Plastic bags kill animals. About 100,000 animals such as dolphins, turtles whales, penguins are killed every year due to plastic bags. Many animals ingest plastic bags, mistaking them for food, and therefore die. And worse, the ingested plastic bag remains intact even after the death and decomposition of the animal. Thus, it lies around in the landscape where another victim may ingest it.

Plastic bags are non-biodegradable. And one of the worst environmental effects of plastic bags is that they are non-biodegradable. The decomposition of plastic bags takes about 1000 years.

Petroleum is required to produce plastic bags. As it is, petroleum products are diminishing and getting more expensive by the day, since we have been using this non-renewable resource increasingly. Petroleum is vital for our modern way of life. It is necessary for our energy requirements – for our factories, transport, heating, lighting, and so on. Without viable alternative sources of energy yet on the horizon, if the supply of petroleum were to be turned off, it would lead to practically the whole world grinding to a halt. Surely, this precious resource should not be wasted on producing plastic bags, should it?

So, What Can be Done about the Use of Plastic Bags?

Single-use plastic bags have become such a ubiquitous way of life that it seems as if we simply cannot do without them. However, if we have the will, we can start reducing their use in small ways.

A tote bag can make a good substitute for holding the shopping. You can keep the bag with the cahier, and then put your purchases into it instead of the usual plastic bag.

Recycling the plastic bags you already have is another good idea. These can come into use for various purposes, like holding your garbage, instead of purchasing new ones.

While governments may be working out ways to lessen the impact of plastic bags on the environment, however, each of us should shoulder some of the responsibility for this problem, which ultimately harms us.

week 5 reflection

We change our idea. We used the same previous idea about designing, but now, we add plastic bags lining and also a second compartment. Now, we just have to do an advertisement about it and our green bag.

Lesson 4 Refelction

I will be working with my group leader Jie Hng and I hope that we can have fun working together and not get so many problems while doing our work. We will be discussing how does the green bags a better alternative than using plastic bags.

Jie Hng thought of an idea of having compartment made of plastic bag. the plastic bag will be sewed to the cloth and so it can put meat of vegetables inside without fearing of the water from it make the bag wet. Our first sketches of it is taken and shown in this blog.

We have started to do our project. We are trying to do a project on designing green bags.

the shopping bag idea: Kenneth and reflection lesson 4

The idea of our product is finalised. Our idea is making an advertisement about saving the world and promoting our own creative shopping bag. Our creative shopping bag will be made with a plastic folder and decorate our bag. Every bag will be unique and special. 

We will design the reusable shopping bag by buy plain shopping bags to design. We will also have fabric markers to design the shopping bags. The plastic folder can be designed and things placed inside. 

Today, every one is giving ideas on the product that JieHng and I had thought of. 

Our advertisement will  be conveying the message of plastic bag is non biodegradable, animal can not eat them, there is alternatives of plastic bag. The creative shopping bags are more creative , it will be more attractive to have their own personal shopping bag and using the shopping bag can also help to save the world.

My group has just decided on what to do for the project. We will be discussing about the topic on reusable shopping bags.

I got an idea when i am watching a youtube video. This video is about a actor drew on an environmental friendly shopping bag as it is very creative. We can maybe print or draw our slogan or campaign on the shopping bag. Selling it and promote the message and get the money to donate to environmentally friendly funds.

Even children aspire to save the world, so why can't the people older than them help to save the world. I think that this advertisement shown in Singapore really convey its message really well and many people started to reduce the usage of plastic bags. These children really understand the importance of saving and helping the world. we should really also learn and help the world.

How can I save the world : Kenneth soon

I am Kenneth Soon (34). I am supposed to research on how to save the world.

1. How to save the world at home?

2. How to save the world in school?

3. How to save the world outside?

1. We can actually save the world at home. By doing something simple can really help to save the world. Switching the lights when it is not in used , change to energy saving light bulbs will help to save the world as it will reduce the use of electricity and reduce of electricity will then reduce the giving out of sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide and carbon emissions. Switching off the sockets will also help to save the world as small amount of electricity is used when the sockets are not completely switched off. Turn the temperature of the air-con to 25 degrees Celsius or even use fan instead of Air-con as it uses less energy than the Air-con. 

2. In school, we can save the world by switching the lights of class rooms and toilets when no one is inside. Using fans instead of Air-con and switching the temperature into 25 degrees Celsius. Reuse paper as using paper will harm the forest. switch the light bulbs into energy saving ones. 

3. Outside, do not spray hairspray that contains CFCs , this will cause the depletion of ozone layer. The ozone layer helps us in protecting the Earth. Drive cars that runs on electricity or water fuel cars. these cars do not give out exhaust gas that will harm the world. Go on public transport and share the transport. Use a recycle bag on shopping than using plastic bags when go shopping.

lesson 3 reflection: Kenneth Soon

I am Kenneth Soon (34). This week, our group had discussed a lot of things, they are:

1. What product our group wants to do?

2. What we going to research on?

3. What we members going to do?

1. Firstly, our leader, Jie Hng thought of making solar panel installed on a bicycle which acts something like the dynamo. Another idea of Jie Hng is installing a solar panel on bag to take in the sunlight and convert it into energy which will charge the power of our macbooks. However, these ideas are all rejected by us because of these reasons: 

(i) The materials of making the solar panel is very expensive

(ii) The ideas are unlikely to be built.

So, I thought of making advertisement, and many members add in their opinions to improve it, like educating the teenagers using these videos about saving gaia.  The videos can also raise the awareness of the people. So, in the end, we have decided on advertisement, and it is about climate change this is very important. An idea was contributed by someone, to print brochures or posters on the videos and climate change. The size of the words must not be small as this will not attract people on reading it. 

2. We are going to research on how to save the world and and the causes that cause the changes. It is very important on doing this as we must make our objectives clear as if even we do not know what global warming and climate change is all about, how can we convey the massage and faith to the others. So every member must do it.

2. Weiren and Stanley are to find out the cause of the global warming. There are a lot of causes for global warming to happen like the use of hairspray, the giving out of methane gas that will destroy the ozone layer is what we are going to research.

Kenneth and Shaun are to find out how can we people save the world, we must know the causes to see how to save the world. The world is so important that all of us should really support us and save the world. 

Jie Hng who contribute himself on researching : If nothing was done to save the world, what will happen. This is again important for our advertisement as this will warn the people that our planet is sick, if we do not help to save the world, the world will die. 

I think that this week, everyone is cooperative and did everything to help.

Reflection on lesson 1 and lesson 2( Kenneth soon)(34)

I am Kenneth soon in 2 Henry. I am going to make the two reflections on lesson 1 and lesson 2.

Reflection1 ( lesson 1):
We knew our group arrangements and knew our teacher in charge of us. It is Mr Paul Leong. That day, we knew the importance of IPW which is known as GRACE. This project requires great teamwork so our group will put in our effort in making GRACE a wonderful project and produce a successful item.

Reflection 2 (lesson 2):
We have decided our group name be " Saving Kaya" this name was contributed by one of our group members call shaun seow. This name was chose among 3 names that were contributed by other team mates. A voting session was conducted among our group and " saving kaya " received the most number of votes. Roles were selected for our group members. However, being the last two groups and the class has forty-two pupil, we have five members. Therefore, we have five posts, they were Leader, Assistant-leader, encourager, questioner and recorder. We have decided the posts for our members.
